Tooth Sensitivity and How to Avoid It

Dental patients across Southwest Florida are curious about causes for common dental problems like sensitive teeth. While tooth sensitivity is very common, it can be uncomfortable to deal with for any period of time. So, let’s explore common causes and recommendations for treatment.


Sensitive Teeth


Have you ever winced from a stinging sensation in one or more of your teeth when having a sip of hot coffee or a taste of ice cream? What about when brushing or flossing? The wincing symptom of sensitive teeth could be caused by a variety of factors including tooth decay, worn tooth enamel, worn tooth fillings, or even exposed tooth roots.


The most common cause of teeth sensitivity is exposed dentin. Dentin is the tissue just beneath the tooth’s enamel that contains nerve fibers. When the dentin loses its protective covering, the nerve fibers are stimulated by heat and cold or even acidic and sticky foods. This is what ends up causing heightened sensitivity and discomfort from beverages and foods that are hot or cold.


The best ways to avoid sensitive teeth include:

  1. Brush your teeth gently using a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid stripping the enamel of your teeth.

  2. Avoid excessive drinking of beverages that are known to cause enamel erosion, like soda and drinks with citric acid – including orange juice. Also, when you drink these beverages, consider using a straw to limit contact of the beverage with your teeth.

  3. Practice proper oral hygiene by brushing correctly and regularly.

If your teeth sensitivity persists, it’s important to first see a dentist to rule out any major dental problems at the root of the cause. Your dentist may recommend desensitizing toothpaste or possibly in-office treatments to apply desensitizing agents to the sensitive areas in your mouth.
